Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction.

For October 13, Coté will read aloud from Philip C. Baker’s novel Hunger Hill.

Summary: First-time hit woman, Silk Rhenko, is the daughter of a Russian oligarch and a Philippine beauty both recently murdered by arch-rival Fyodor Umarov. Revenge-bent Rhenko has strategically maneuvered herself into the role of Umarov’s right-hand assassin with payback on her mind.

Rhenko makes a rookie mistake on her first job and, as a result, the bodies start piling up in the streets of Hunger Hill home to a tourist attraction, the iconic observatory tower. Once home to waves of immigrants, the new wealthy are replacing the Greeks, the Italians, the Russians, and the Irish working class on the Hill. Fyodor Umarov intends to be one of these new property owners.

To solve the murder spree, seasoned Detective Basil Keene, happy with his work/life balance is assigned the case along with two fellow detectives. The unlikely Eileen Mack, an underage bartender at Sully’s Tap — a hard-scrabble girl with a chip on her shoulder following a tumultuous childhood with an alcoholic father and an absent mother involuntarily joins the team. Until now her most pressing concern has been her ability to move matter with just her mind. Thusfar success has been out of reach. She may or may not have a connection with the paranormal.

Former sports star, technically clever, and new addition to the city’s police force, Detective Diane Peterson is sharp and determined; she is also very keen to rise above the stereotypes for promotion.

A corner market on the Hill, a violent storm at sea, and a tight window of opportunity for Umarov and his thugs to succeed – all combine to build suspense in this new crime thriller set in Maine by a talented new writer.
