Every Friday, at 11:00 am, on the library’s YouTube Channel and Facebook Page, the library will stream a brand new recording of local thespian, Joseph Coté reading aloud selections from a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining books of fiction and non-fiction. This is a program to help keep our community connected to books during the pandemic when we are unable to meet in person.

For October 28, Coté will read aloud from P.G. Wodehouse’s novel Life at Blandings.

Summary: P.G. Wodehouse entices us into the demise of Blandings Castle – an apparent paradise where it is eternal high summer, with jolly parties, tea on the lawn and love trysts in the rose garden.

But for Clarence, ninth Earl of Emsworth, there is always something to disturb this tranquil scene.

Lord Emsworth, not the brightest of sparks, is constantly having to foil attempts to nobble his pig, the Empress Of Blandings, when entering her into fattest pig competitions (the first episode deals with just such a dastardly plan), while attempting to ignore the chaos rampaging around him.

As in so many of Wodehouse’s greatest comic works, the pages are filled with fearsome aunts, useless firstborns, rakish boulevardiers, preternaturally wise butlers and pretty yet unsuitable young women.

Emsworth, who prefers to spend his evenings reading up on pig maintenance and the latest trends in pig nutrition, is faintly appalled by it all.
