Friday's Featured Artist Number 25: Jason Eaglen: Artist Portfolio Tour and Video Vignette.

Jason's Bio:

"I love to watch artists work on video. I grew up watching Bob Ross, I still watch Bill Alexander's old shows, and I watch a host of online artists via YouTube and Instagram. When it comes to art, I am like the person who is both delighted and puzzled at a good magic show because I wonder, "How did they do that?" I am captivated by how artists can manipulate a medium and colors to make something come to life on a two-dimensional surface, particularly when they can make shadows and light appear to be real."

"I started oil painting as a hobby in 2016, and after being encouraged by some people close to me, I started to create videos of my own. They have evolved over time to become a window that allows viewers to enjoy the process that goes into creating the "magic" of making art. They are intended to inspire people who want to make art of their own, and also to be entertaining to those who just want to relax and enjoy seeing how a blank canvas undergoes numerous steps to become a final picture. I edit the videos so viewers only see the essential steps in the process, and choose the music thoughtfully so that it accompanies the mood of the painting being developed. Video editing has become another art form to me in its own right."

My videos range from very quick time-lapses to full-length spoken tutorials. The thread that ties them all together is that I love making things for people to enjoy looking at, and try to make videos that will make anyone from the person who just likes to fall asleep while watching soothing art videos to the artist who is looking for a best practice to solve a problem I might have encountered as well. I know that art can be intimidating for someone who has never tried it, and I try to make it very clear that I am figuring out how to make things just like anyone else; although it is frustrating when my work doesn't match the image I have in my mind, there are often ways to work it out. After talking with others, I know I am not alone with this part of the process, and I believe it is helpful for viewers who might be frustrated with their work know they likewise are not alone.

"To me, art is about sharing a vision of the world with others. I'm grateful to Larry Williams for providing this forum for new and less-known artists to do precisely that. There is incredible joy knowing someone enjoyed watching a video I made or has one of my pieces hanging prominently in their home. My subject matter ranges from landscapes to still life's, and they all have unique challenges that I chronicle in my videos."

"Bill Alexander (1915-1997), host of the show, "The Magic of Oil Painting," often said that when one paints, "they are next to God," because they are making something from nothing. Our ability to make things is an incredible gift, and my hope for viewers is that they recognize they too have this gift--perhaps not with painting, but with something they can create, whether it's through knitting, writing, cooking, carpentry, building model cars, or anything else. I believe that when we use this gift, we can find tremendous joy and satisfaction. I know that the more I paint, the more I love looking at the world. I need people to help me cultivate that vision, and I use my videos to help others cultivate theirs."
