From Heroes of Might & Magic to Songs of Conquest!
629Heroes of Might & Magic is a classic adventure that almost defines a subgenre... the turn-based strategy RPG. Although I didn't grow up playing HoMM I did try Heroes 3 on this channel not too long ago and it's good! Personally, I'm more of a fan of Age of Wonders 1 as I grew up with that but I can see parallels between the two series. However, I have an inkling that the newer games for both worlds are decent but not quite as loved as the old school entries and for the past few years we have been anticipating a brand new game that looked like polished nostalgia, Songs of Conquest [preview code provided]. What looks to be the spiritual successor to these games of old.
Instantly the pixel art style strikes you, whether you love it or hate it, but I see it as one of the best executions of pixel art in gaming, which made me worry that gameplay would not be up to the level of its visuals. Will combat be dynamic and interesting? How about city management? Spells, cool or mediocre? Even if the game matches what we know, it would be disappointing because it needs to be better, to surpass its inspiration, and based on our experience that seems like almost an impossible task. Today, I go in with great concern as we can finally play the first public version of Songs of Conquest to see if it's actually a good game. Please be good...
