ugh. so overlapping heat zones has no cumulative effect. boo. also, outpost speed isn't applicable if you're not switching between depots.
oh, i ripped out the nearby infirmaries and put them further out so i could put in houses there.
fyi, i really didn't need factory since i lacked another core...and...*shrug* didn't end up needing it
