This is a bit of a hot topic when it comes to retro gaming. When you post a video to YouTube do you keep the original aspect ratio with black bars or do you crop them out and make it fullscreen?
There is no 'right' way of doing it, it usually comes down to personal preference. Obviously there usually is a loss of quality when cropping to fullscreen but this is usually only found when you actaully watch the video in fullscreen mode.
Personally, I prefer cropping them to fullscreen, I despise black bars and always have. I can also understand why people prefer to keep the original aspect ratio. Afterall, wasn't that the way it was originally intended to be shown?
In this example I take three Playstation One games and show the original ratio followed by the fullscreen cropping. The PS3 does some upscaling itself so the quality was further improved due to that. I also added in some colour correction from Sony Vegas to improve the quality.
The games tested were Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Crash Team Racing and Final Fantasy VIII.
The usual SD aspect ratio is 4:3 while most HD aspect ratios use 16:9
