On December 1, 2012, Harvester Games released their dark game, The Cat Lady, a creepy digital graphic novel with side-scrolling scene changes. Meeting with both critical and gamer praise, the game continues to this day to be an excellent example of story-driven experience.
Gameplay is very simple. No mouse or controllers are used; only W, A, S, D, and the Enter key are used. A and D move the character left and right. When close to an interactive element (object or character), an up-arrow symbol will appear; the W key will then make the character interact with that element. W and S move up and down through options (e.g., Examine and Use on an object; various replies during a dialogue). The Esc key will open the game menu for loading, saving, or exiting.
Susan Ashworth is a 40-year-old single woman who has grown lonely and weary of the world. With only her cats to keep her company, she finally decides this life isn't for her. Rather than going directly to heaven or to hell, she instead finds herself in a kind of purgatory, where she meets the Queen of Maggots. Following this conversation, she is saved from death, now with a purpose: Find and destroy 5 individuals known as "Fallen Ones", saving — or perhaps corrupting — her own soul in the process.
