Galaxy Race - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
What happens if you take Sprint Vector, then remove the unique locomotion system, the sense of speed, the content and the fun? You get Galaxy Race!
Unfortunately this is another game that the developers asked me to take a look at and I have to give a thumbs down.
Lets start with the easy stuff. This game is NOT labeled as an Early Access title, is $14.99 on steam and only has 3 single player maps. That's it. Three maps, no character selection, no content. Definitely not $15 worth of content. The price vs content alone is enough to not recommend the game.
They do have 4 other game modes that are currently greyed out but seem to be planned for the future. Right now it seems like you're buying into a promise. Like most EA titles. But this isn't labeled as EA...
Moving on. No sense of speed. You don't feel like you're going fast the same way you do with Sprint Vector. You feel pretty slow until you hit a booster. In a racing game, that just doesn't feel good.
The about the game section in Steam says that you get to take control of "one of a handful of original and colorful characters" and it's very literal. You get *one*. There appear to be 4 characters but you don't get to pick your character. Fairly minor but it's another instance where I feel the game is dishonest. To me it reads like it implies character selection. That may just be me though. Regardless, you only get one character and that's another failing of the game.
Their "Gravimotion" locomotion system effectively turns your body into a thumb stick. You travel in the direction you lean. This system could be interesting if the tech was there and we had a platform that we could kick out in the other direction like changing direction on a snowboard. Without the lower half input, this locomotion mode feels very unsatisfying and lacking finer control. That could be my lack of practice.
The AI feels like it's rubberbanded right behind you. No matter how well you do or how many mines you leave in your wake, it doesn't feel like the AI hits the mines at all and they're always right behind you. It's a bit frustrating. The 'combat' part of the game seems to only hinder you as you come back around and hit your own mines.
Overall, Galaxy Race just didn't feel like it was worth the time investment much less the $15 they're asking. Between the lack of content and the seemingly deceptive Steam store page, I can't recommend this game.
