Games for Windows 95 CD Sampler - Double Switch
Next demo available in the list is Double Switch. Released in 1995 for Windows 95, and 1993 for SEGA CD consoles, this game makes strong use of cinematic videos. The game is presented as a movie, in which the player can interact with the scenes being played, and change the outcome of them. Gotta say that this technique was quite popular in the era, as we are going to see in other demos from this sampler CD.
In Double Switch, you basically have camera feeds on different locations on an apartment complex called Edward Arms. Each place that can be visited lets the player monitor anything that is happening in there, arm and activate any available traps in the place. Sometimes multiple events happen at the same time, having the player going from scene to scene to try and activate traps to unfold the rest of the story of the game.
As far as the story goes, the owner of the apartment complex, a young man called Eddie, contacts you via video call, and tells you about cameras and traps set in the place. Eddie is locked in the basement at the start, so he relies on you to protect the tenants and anything within the apartments from being stolen, since the place itself was built upon some ruins, and it was rumored to contain valuable items. Along trapping thieves or suspicious people, you have to find some code to unlock the basement and release Eddie.
Along with the main story arc, each tenant living in the complex has its own story, which unfolds as the game progresses. It's basically like watching a movie with many stories happening at the same time, but instead of being directed by whoever made the production, you get to choose what to see, and even make some things happen to alter the way stories unfold.
Digital Pictures, the studio behind Double Switch, ended up in bankruptcy in 1996, and the game rights were purchased by a consortium that remastered the game in 2016, releasing it for mobile devices via Google Play.
