No matter if you work on an IDE or a RCP application, user experience (UX) sooner or later should become a concern. With the recent hype on Gamification, I want to give a critical insight on what it means to "apply game mechanisms and characteristics in non-gaming contexts with the goal to improve user experience (UX) and user engagement".

Why this talk?
Gamification features some really exciting ideas that can improve products and processes. But it is more than to provide an achievement for clicking the right button. It's about considering our natural curiosity, our wish to compete or cooperate, our awareness of aesthetics, and last but not least our ability to be emotionally attached to something. All that makes it a hard-to-grasp topic, often misused, often misunderstood, and by many filed under 'yet another buzzword'.

Goal and intended takeaways
Showing different examples, I want to explain what Gamification is and highlight that the term itself is the least important thing. I want to show the potential but also make aware of the difficulties and dangers that come with Gamification.
Since this is a side issue of the conference, I hope that the participants will get a basic idea on what Gamification actually means and why it should be on everyone's radar.
