Here's an amazing piece of work done by marc_max that you can find at http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4051/ and will only work on the European ROM of the game currently.

This recently came out and is worth covering due to the immense amount of work that went into this--since Rare scaled down all the sprites for the game in order to fit it within the GBA's smaller screen, and then independently brightened all the color palettes themselves from there, it was impossible to simply make a basic color palette swap as none of the original color palettes matched anymore--so all original content from the SNES version had to have their palettes be painstakingly recreated by hand.

Now, the atmosphere of the original levels has been restored to how they were originally in the SNES version, and you can choose to play with the save-anywhere feature, tougher extended bosses, cutscenes, extra completion incentives, and lives/continue system from the GBA game if they are what you prefer.

This patch is not necessarily 100% complete as it does not affect any portions of the game that were not in the original game and a very small few extra bits, but regardless of all that, it's worth the try.
