In Gears 5's cooperative PVE mode known as Escape 3 players can attempt to take down a swarm hive. Each player is taken into the hive via a snatcher and once podded the players break free and plant a "Venom" bomb that when detonated releases a toxic gas that will slowly fill the hive. The Venom ensures that the players must keep moving to avoid being poisoned by it themselves. To Escape the players must fight waves of swarm enemies to reach extraction before the venom catches them. Escape can be played on several difficulties and as the difficulty increases the game adds more complex elements to make the hive more of a challenge for the players. Each hive has it's own mutators to mix up the challenge and keep the different maps interesting. This weeks hive is called The Surge and the modifiers applied are as follows, More Filler Enemies (More Juvies and Rejects are added to encounters), More Lethal (Damage to players is increased), More health (Enemies have increased health), More Scions (More Scions are added to encounters), More Drones (More Swarm Drone variants are added to encounters), More Pouncers (More Pouncers are added to encounters), Ironman (No respawns allowed! Players who die cannot be revived).
