Geronimo was a famous Apache leader and medicine man who fought against the Mexican and U.S. forces that tried to take over his people’s land. He was born in 1829 in Arizona and belonged to the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache. He became a warrior after his family was killed by Mexican soldiers in 1851. He led many raids and battles against the enemies of his people, and earned the name Geronimo, which some say came from the cries of the Mexican soldiers who feared him. He was known for his courage, skill, and spiritual power. He surrendered to the U.S. army in 1886, after being pursued by a large force for many months. He spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of war in various places, until he died in 1909 in Oklahoma. He is remembered as a symbol of resistance and freedom by many Native Americans and others.
