15Guy Fawkes was a Catholic who was involved in a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London on 5 November 1605. The plot was an attempt to assassinate King James I, who was a Protestant, and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The plot failed when Fawkes was discovered guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellar of the Parliament building. He was arrested, tortured, and executed for treason.
The Gunpowder Plot is remembered every year on 5 November, also known as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night. People celebrate by lighting bonfires and fireworks, and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes.
