In this exact video for example I had to talk about how this Drag & Drop Block called "Get Global Variable" is actually not necessary to use, for me at least.
Since, instead of using the D&D block, you can just type global."variable name" and get the same result.
Both of the approaches will pull, or "get" the global variable value for you, so you can then use it for your needs.
I think some of those quirks and problems are price of trying to turn GML into D&D, and that had to be at some cost.
