The sequel introduces a fresh character, Atsu, who takes over from Jin Sakai, the samurai protagonist of the first game. In the reveal trailer, Atsu is seen wielding an assortment of weapons, including an uchigatana, a chained weapon, and even a rifle.
She is also accompanied by a wolf, hinting at more dynamic interactions with wildlife. Sucker Punch emphasized that the new story is not just a continuation but a reinvention of the "Ghost" concept, exploring the origins of a new legend.
Sony confirmed the sequel will not star our favorite defiant samurai Jin Sakai as it takes place more than 300 years after the ghost was forced to kill his uncle following the end of the mongol war. Instead, we'll follow Atsu's journey, which picks up in the year 1603. Safe to assume we'll be far, far away from Tsushima Island this time around too.
Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day
Mount Yotei, a monumental mountain peak in Japan that's known as Hokkaido today will be our setting. The devs mentioned how this area was out of Japan rule at the time, which could hint at some story aspects. If Japan doesn't control this area then the shogun has no authority, meaning there is no higher power executing warriors who have no honor.
Set in 1603, more than three centuries after the original, Ghost of Yotei moves away from the island of Tsushima to the wild, untamed region near Mount Yōtei, a volcano located in what is now Hokkaido.
This new location promises players a vast, open-world environment with diverse landscapes, including grassy plains and snowy tundras. Unlike Tsushima’s samurai-governed society, the new setting reflects a region beyond the control of the Japanese government at the time, filled with unexpected challenges.
