61The game tells the story of Atsu, a lone mercenary driven by vengeance. She returns to her hometown after a 16-year absence with a singular mission: vengeance against the "Yotei Six," a group of outlawed samurai criminals led by Lord Saitō.
As a child, Atsu witnesses the Yotei Six murder her family and leave her for dead. She survives and grows into a skilled warrior. The main story follows Atsu's brutal and determined pursuit of the six members of the group, as her actions inspire fear and reverence, earning her the nickname "Onryō," or vengeful spirits returning for vengeance.
As Atsu pursues her vengeful pursuit, she encounters a major battle between Saitō's army and the forces of the Matsumae clan, the power of the Shogunate. This fierce war serves as the intense backdrop for Atsu's personal quest, as she ultimately discovers that this journey is about more than just revenge. And it will lead her to discover unexpected allies and a new purpose.

Onryō (怨霊) is a vengeful spirit. An onryō is the spirit of someone who has died unjustly, been betrayed, murdered, or otherwise suffered great suffering. The intense anger, hatred, or jealousy that preceded their death prevents their soul from ascending to the afterlife, forcing them to return to the mortal world to seek vengeance.
