Gimmick! 2 | Physics-based Star-throwing Platformer
Hey guys, we're going to put up a review for this game in the next few days over at Questline, but here's a cool platformer that we got the chance to preview. It's apparently a sequel, but I've never played the first Gimmick! game, so I'm not sure if it's a better game than the previous one or not. But this game is definitely good and has a lot of physics motion-based platforming puzzles for you to sink your teeth into. They're challenging and really tease your brain. There are also a lot of collectibles if you're into that stuff, secrets to discover, and loads of optional side-content.
The gameplay reminds me of classic games like Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (1990) and Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988). You beat opponents not by stepping on them, but by throwing a star at them. The star is this bouncy little thing that you can summon at will but can only have one at a time. So there are also a lot of timing-based challenges in this game, which will really bring out the best out of your platforming skills.
The game has a banger of a soundtrack, too, with some really crisp audio design to seal the deal.
I haven't played a lot of challenging platformers for quite a while, so I might have just exposed myself in this video because of how terrible I sometimes am, but I managed to beat the first level in 20 minutes. Can you do the same? Let us know! And I'm definitely playing more of this for the review, so stay tuned for that.
Thanks to Bitwave Games, Clear River Games, Sunsoft, and Overload PR for the review copy.
Played and reviewed on the PS5. The game has been out on PC and on the Nintendo Switch since September 2024, but the PS4, PS5, and Xbox versions will be coming out on January 30, 2025.
