GLQuake was a patch for the original Quake that added hardware 3D acceleration support to the game. It ran on all fully OpenGL compatible graphics cards and added some extra effects to the game besides speeding it up greatly. While the original Quake looked quite pixelated and ran smoothly just in lower resolutions (320x240 and such), GLQuake allowed for higher resolutions (640x480 and up), faster framerates and better effects like texture filtering (smooth textures instead of pixelated ones), edge anti-aliasing (less jaggy look) and transparent water. I'm showing here how the transparent water looked like, as you can see it is pretty interesting and reminds on modern shader effects. However, this is not the original GLQuake because it doesn't run on my current system, I am using a newer, unofficial version called "GLPro" which is better than the original one.
