This week, we have a pair of sequels to Golden Axe: Golden Axe II, the direct-to-Genesis follow-up, and Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, a lesser-known (and entirely distinct) arcade-only spin-off.
Golden Axe II delivers exactly what you'd expect: simple but reasonably fun button-mashing in a low fantasy setting. It boasts a significantly improved magic system that allows the player to determine how much of their magic power to devote to a given magic attack.
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder does *not* feature this enhanced magic system, but what it does have going for it is being *easily* the best game in this series! Fun new characters! Cool moves and animations! Cool environments! Exceptionally cool spell effects! It's not setting the world on fire, but it's doing as much as you can with the limited tools Golden Axe provides.
Next week, we're on to the final game in the original series: Sega's Golden Axe III. Consensus is that it's the weak link of the series... will we discover that it defies conventional wisdom?
