Description and timestamps below:
A 90's gaming masterpiece has finally returned! Rare Limited’s Goldeneye 007 was released for the Nintendo 64 on August 25, 1997. Despite being a quarter of a century old, this game still sits near the top of many, many 90s gamers’ top ten video games lists. And hearts. Including my own.
This is the ONE game I envied not having as I did not own an N64 growing up. Many memories and fun times were had in the 90s when me and my sister would play this game on 4 player split screen round our neighbours house. Endless fun.
Not long after celebrating its 25th anniversary just last year, the well known tangled net of rights issues surrounding GoldenEye 007 was finally untangled just enough for the classic first-person shooter to be ported to modern platforms, and for new players (and veterans like me) to reexperience the game on Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch. The Xbox version has no online multiplayer but a much improved control scheme, being far less tedious than the original and the Switch has online multiplayer but not an ideal control scheme. I have played the Xbox version and I have honestly had an absolute blast playing it!
So why is this game SO beloved by many people? While many recently who have played it said the game hasn't aged well when compared to other modern shooters (and I partly agree), they need to understand the time period the game was in.
For many people, it was their very first time getting their hands on a first-person shooter game to play on a home console, staying up all night long competing against a living room full of friends, and creating lasting memories. Modern day shooters these days may have better graphics, accessibility, multiplayer and mechanics. But this game laid many of the foundations and fundamentals seen in all of them: Examples? An atmospheric single-player campaign with stealth elements, parts of the body hit for varying damage (which was revolutionary for it's time), it's distinctive and high quality soundtrack (heavily inspired and uses sound assets from the film) and it's renowned multiplayer deathmatch mode. It was one of the very first major games to incorporate multiplayer into the first-person shooter genre for the home console. All of this as has paved the way for why first person shooters are so popular, well designed and fun these days by reworking the formula that this game initally had.
But enjoy my playthrough on 00 Agent Difficulty!
