Just a quick video showing some readily available peripherals for putting together a vlogging setup for the GoPro Hero 8 Black.
As it's October and the Media Mod won't be available for pre-order until December, the only way to record your external vlogging microphones is to use the GoPro Pro 3.5mm mic adapter. Add to that an extra few peripherals and you've got yourself a makeshift vlogging rig with a mic input until the release of the Media Mod.
Is this a perfect solution for a vlogging rig for the GoPro Hero8, absolutely not. But it does however get the job done and it gets it done very well.
While many may see the biggest issue being that you have take the side door off the Hero8 in order to use the GoPro 3.5mm mic adapter. In practice this is no issue at all. Yes, it does expose the battery compartment, SD card and USB C port to the elements and environmental conditions. But you will also have the same considerations with Media Mod when that's released, as it has exposed ports, HDMI, USB C and a 3.5mm microphone jack input. So, in either case you have to be sensible with the use of either setup.
As for the way the audio adapter is connected. Yes, it's very unorthodox and neither the adapter or the USB C port were designed to be used in such a way. But in practice and as you can see in the video, the mic cable is firmly attached to the RODE VieoMicro via the cable restraint on the cold shoe mic clip, most other video microphones have similar functionality or you can always wrap the surplus cable around the mic clip or cold show mount. So in effect, the audio adapter is being suspended and supported by the RODE VideoMicro via its mic cable. With some care and attention you wont have any issues with this arrangement and the USB C port firmly holds the external mic adapter in place and the battery is in sold and wont fall out under normal vloggng use.
All things being equal and if the Media Mod were available, then none of these types of setups would be necessary. But if you're a vlogger or any who's GoPro use requires high quality audio from external microphones, then this suggested vlogging rig may well work for you as a stopgap until the release of the Media Mod.
