Gothic 2 Night of the Raven is a third-person RPG in which we play the role of the nameless hero known from the previous part. The game develops the assumptions of the original both in terms of gameplay and plot. The German studio Piranha Bytes is responsible for its creation.
The game received very good reviews at the time of its release and, like the first part, gained cult status in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. Over the years, a large community has developed around it and an advanced modding scene has developed.
Plot
Similarly to Gothic, here we are also not allowed to learn the name of the main character. The action of the game begins a month after the finale of the first part - the protagonist managed to banish the Sleeper and destroy the Magic Barrier, but his exceptional deed cost him his life. Brought back to the world by the necromancer Xardas, he receives a new task: he must stop the dragons and their army lying in the Valley of Mines, planning to occupy the entire island of Khorinis. To do this, he has to convince the paladins to give him the Eye of Innos - a magical amulet that allows you to talk to dragons.
After the fall of the Barrier, the prisoners of the Mining Colony dispersed around the island, mostly sticking to their illegal profession. However, some assimilated into society and took on completely new roles - this way, during the game we can meet many of the characters we know from the first part, willing to cooperate or compete.
An important aspect of the plot of Gothic 2 are the guilds: the City Guard, Mercenaries and Fire Mages. Joining each of them requires completing other missions and affects the way the main plot is conducted. In addition to the mandatory tasks, we can also complete many "side quests", emphasizing the atmosphere of the production and allowing for a more detailed understanding of the history of the game world.
Mechanics
The gameplay in Gothic 2 can be divided into 3 main elements: dialogues, exploration and combat. During conversations with characters, we obtain information about lore, conduct quests, learn new skills or trade. The missions are not overly complicated, but we can complete them in various ways thanks to their open structure. Often, we obtain the hints needed to complete them in dialogues that are theoretically unrelated to them, so it is worth being inquisitive.
We improve our character with acquired learning points. After gaining the appropriate amount of experience - which we receive for defeating opponents, completing tasks or undertaking various side activities - we advance to a higher level and receive 10 PN, which we use to develop combat skills or other abilities (opening locks, alchemy, etc.). An additional way to strengthen statistics is to equip ourselves with appropriate equipment (amulets, rings) or crafting, which allows us to create potions or weapons. We have at our disposal weapons for close combat, ranged weapons, divided into bows and crossbows, and magic, divided into runes with infinite functionality and single-use scrolls.
The opponents in the game are diverse and to defeat them we often have to adopt different strategies. It is important to properly measure your strength against your intentions – the game mercilessly deals with players who have entered a dangerous area at a low level. However, sensible and thorough exploration pays off, allowing us to obtain many valuable items and gain additional experience points.
