Gothic 2 NoTR Combat and Attributes Explained.

Melee damage.

Formula is: ((weapon damage + strength) / 10) - opponent's armor value.
Example: (30 weapon damage + 10 strength) / 10 - 25 (leather armor) = less than 0 damage.
If damage is less than 5 - it willl be 5.

As your strength and weapon skill increases you will have a higher chance to inflict a critical hit.
Critical hit damage formula is: (weapon damage + strength) - opponent's armor value.
Example: (30 weapon damage + 10 strength) - 25 (leather armor) = 15 damage.

Melee damage, that is not inflicted by weapons, is fixed (always criticals).

To make a melee attack: hold left mouse button to select a target, then press a direction key (WASD):
W will make a forward charging attack.
AD will make a left and right attack.
S will make a parry, but only melee weapons can be parried.

Melee weapons (except rapiers) require strength to equip them, rapiers require dexterity.

Ranger damage.

Formula is: (weapon damage + dexterity) - opponent's projectile protection value.
Example: (30 weapon damage + 10 dexterity) - 20 (leather armor) = 20 damage.
If damage is less than 5 - it will be 5.
Some enemies are immune to arrows, but they can be defeated by using scrolls.

As your dexterity and ranged weapon skill increases you will be able to shoot arrows at a greater distance.
At 10 dexterity and 10 ranged weapon skill you will only be able to shoot at a melee range.
Ranged attacks are often interrupted by melee attacks.

To make a ranged attack: hold left mouse button to select a target, then press W to shoot.

Crossbows require strength to equip them, bows require dexterity.

Spell damage.

Formula is: spell damage - opponent's magic defense.
Example: 25 spell damage (fire arrow) - 0 (leather armor) = 25 damage.
No attribute or level will increase spell damage, the only way to get more damage is to learn stronger spells.

Rune spells have 5 damage per 1 point of mana.
Most of scrolls cost only 5 mana, regardless of their damage.
Mana does not regenerate and must be replenished by using items or herbs.

Stronger spells are more efficient against enemies that have magic defense.
Example:
50 damage (ice arrow) - 20 defense (shadowbeast) = 30 damage, for 10 mana = 3 points of damage per 1 mana.
100 damage (ice lance) - 20 defense (shadowbeast) = 80 damage, for 20 mana = 4 points of damage per 1 mana.
500 damage (rain of fire) - 20 defense (shadowbeast) = 480 damage, for 100 mana = 4.8 points of damage per 1 mana.

To make a magic attack: hold left mouse button to select a target, then press W to cast.
Spells can be cast at any range, between very close to very far.

Attributes.

Nameless Hero starts with:
10 strength, dexterity and mana.
10% skill for every weapon type.
And gets 10 learning points per level.

To increase attribute or skill hero must spend learning points (LP).
+1 to attribute or skill will cost:
1 LP between 10 to 30.
2 LP between 30 to 60.
3 LP between 60 to 90.
4 LP between 90 to 120.
5 LP between 120 to 200.
If attribute or skill is at 29 | 59 | 89 | 119 points - cost of getting next 5 attribute / skill points will not increase.
Example:
29 attribute points + 5 LP = 34 attribute points.
30 attribute points + 8 LP = 34 attribute points.

There are many ways to increase attributes without spending LP, but they must be saved for later game, when there is no LP
to increase attributes further.
Ways to increrase attributes / skills without spending LP:
Donate 50 gold to Innos priest in Khorinis.
Donate 100 gold to Innos shrine, once per day.
Ancient tablets.
Permanent potions.
Life increases by 12 points per level.
