The third installment of one of the most popular series of RPG games, launched in 2001 by the previously unknown Piranha Bytes studio.
After the fight for survival in the mining colony (Gothic I), after the fight with orcs throughout the island of Khorinis (Gothic II), after discovering that Khorinis hides many more dangers, much older than the orcs (Gothic II: Night of the Raven), it was the turn of for the third part of Gothika, which gives us a piece of the mainland. The world presented in Gothik III consists of three great lands: the desert Varrant, the ice-covered Nordmar and Myrthana with a European, medieval atmosphere. This is an area approximately four times larger than that offered even by Night of the Raven.
The fight against the orcs, which began in earnest in the second part of the game, is over - the humans lost it decisively. All cities of Myrthana came under the control of orc troops, people were enslaved or agreed to shameful work for the occupier, while King Rhobar with a handful of loyal paladins took refuge in the capital - Vengard - under the cover of a magical barrier. The same one that was the player's prison in the first part. The player - together with his companions who have always accompanied him on his adventures: Lee, Lester, Gorn, Milten and Diego - arrives at the shore of Myrthana to immediately engage in a fight with the orcs. However, his further actions are no longer limited in any way. He can fight for the liberation of Myrthana alongside the royalists hiding in the forests, he can join the orcs and work for them to strengthen their victory, he can also ally with the assassins living in the desert.
As in previous versions of the game, the player cannot create his own character, but its development has been significantly expanded. Compared to its predecessor, sword fighting has been made much easier, while losing most of the previously offered possibilities. On the other hand, the player can now learn to fight with two swords. In addition to practicing hand-to-hand combat, the player can develop his character in archery or magic.
The latter looks slightly different in Gothic 3. The runic magic that the player used so far was annihilated by the necromancer Xardas and now the spells are based on ancient knowledge, which the player can gradually learn - although it comes down to using a standard set of spells, starting with fireball, ending rain.
However, the greatest advantage of the third part of Gothika seems to be the sophisticated design of the world, 20 cities and human settlements, the largest of which bring to mind the capital of Khorinis. The visually very diverse world goes hand in hand with the richness of flora and fauna, and the circadian rhythm to which everything living follows. There are 600 missions for the player to complete and many not always obvious choices, which are not made easier by the freedom of action. You can learn blacksmithing, alchemy and culinary skills. The biggest drawback is the very poor technical level of the game, which resulted in a series of patches published immediately after the premiere.
