Ian Scott made a couple of classic indie titles for the Atari ST, much like the first one this was an adventure game written in STOS involving an elderly grump named Grandad. He has decided to leave the house for the day and traded his wheelchair for a motorbike. Whilst out in a popular park he decides to have the sandwiches that he prepared earlier and realises that he misplaced them. Apparently he has lost them in a place called Funland, an amusement park and it’s up to you to not only infiltrate the park, but to work out where his lost lunch is. It uses the standard adventure game logic of item management, along with some adult humour.

Ian Scott definitely went bigger in scope this time around giving more locations and better visuals. I kind of wished that the Atari ST outputted in 1080p because some of the items that you have to pick up are either very small or don’t seem to be visible, I had to do a lot of screen hunting to find them. I made it worse for myself admittedly by going for the authentic 1993 experience by playing this on a 15 inch CRT.

Just like its predecessor this was a public domain release with the second half of the game being locked off, at which point you had to pay in order to discover the code to continue on with the game. Unfortunately unlike the last game which was just a simple code which never changes, this one uses an encryption matrix; so you will get a command like enter the four digit code at Column 8, row 15. Whilst this was a good way to stop pirates back in the day, coming back 24 years later to play my original ST floppy disks, I realised that I don’t have the matrix and thus Funland is locked off from me. So unfortunately I am not able to do the full walkthrough that I would have wanted, so I can only do as far as I can get which is up to the gates of the amusement park. I believe there are cracks for this online, but I’m having problems getting my PC and ST to accept files from each other at the moment, so I can’t ascertain whether they actually work or not. For the moment this will have to be half a walkthrough until I can work out a solution.

Here is my playthrough of the original Grandad and The Quest for The Holey Vest game for the ST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfobDWejiMI
