GRASS VALLEY EDIUS PRO 7 4K VIDEO TEST
This test is designed to show the capabilities of Edius 7, running 4K video. The computer system is a sub £1000.00 Haswell I7 based computer, with 16GB ram and a Kingston SSD. There are two video clips in the time line, both are 4K using the Grass Valley HQX codec @ 4:2:2 plus a couple of 18Mp still pictures.
As you can see the first 8 seconds of video is running fine, even with a dissolve to black applied in real time. After that point there are random key-framed dissolves between the two video clips with random key-framed re-sizing, plus a couple of 18MP stills using colour correction.
Although after the initial single clip with dissolve, the time line losses real time capability. The point to bear in mind is that Edius 7 is still showing a real time play through, but with frames dropping in order to keep the composited output playing.
The real significance here is that E7 on this modest Haswell system, is well capable of playing and editing typical film/drama type projects at 4K in full HQX in real time. Although it is not shown in the video, the rendering of the none real time parts in order to get real time preview, is a little over real time for the entire time line. This includes all the crazy key framing.
It is also worth noting that no other Win 7 based NLE can deal with 4K in its own proprietary codec, or otherwise. With the ease that E7 does on this system, there is also nothing on the Mac platform to match this either. This really is more than a modest jump to 4K by Edius, especially when used on a modest system at full resolution. Again, it's worth noting that previous versions of Edius could not work at 4K the way that 7 is doing, on such a system. The video clips were also running off the same boot SSD as Windows and the Edius 7 software.
