Greyhill Incident - Game Review

Hey there, gaming enthusiasts! Welcome back to the Veteran Game channel, the cornerstone of gaming wisdom and reviews. Today, we're diving into the murky waters of the horror genre with Greyhill Incident.

Greyhill Incident draws inspiration from classic alien invasion stories, positioning you in the shoes of an irate, baseball-bat-wielding single father named Ryan. While this sounds like an exciting setup, in execution, the game struggles to deliver the thrill of its premise. Picture this: instead of an exhilarating standoff against extraterrestrial invaders, you're essentially embarking on a prolonged visit from the in-laws. All the while, you're carrying out a series of vague and mundane tasks akin to running errands around town.

The narrative, unfortunately, meanders into nonsensical territory, leading to a rather anticlimactic ending after just three hours. It’s a story that paradoxically feels dragged out and yet too brief. The dialogue is another weak point, with the performance sounding so mechanical that you might suspect it was written and performed by an underwhelming AI chatbot. Lines like "I know how to shoot because of the Vietnam War" and "Dad, we need to get out of this cursed place, I hate this neighborhood hole" are unintentionally memorable for all the wrong reasons.

There's a chance, of course, that Greyhill Incident is attempting to be ironic, that its absurdity is part of its charm. But if that's the case, it fails to strike the right balance, and the comedic moments largely miss their mark, lost amidst monotonous gameplay and bland environments.

The stealth mechanics are particularly uninspiring. With a painfully slow movement speed and a stamina bar that takes an age to replenish, the game turns even minor tasks into tedious affairs. Your strategies for evasion are limited to hiding in trash cans and cars, and you're not provided any other ways to distract or avoid the aliens. The hand-cranked flashlight, a potentially interesting item, is rendered virtually pointless due to the loud noise it generates.

Speaking of the aliens, they're disappointingly unimpressive. Their design is cartoonish rather than threatening, and their behavior patterns are more comical than scary. While they can technically kill you, most encounters result in them getting clobbered by a baseball bat, which turns these potential antagonists into a source of amusement rather than terror.

To add to the game's woes, it is also plagued by an array of technical bugs, including performance issues, disappearing object parts, and overlapping voice lines. All of these issues collectively lead to an experience that's more frustrating than immersive or enjoyable.

All in all, Greyhill Incident is a lackluster attempt at the horror genre, failing to provide either genuine scares or an engaging ironic humor. It's a tedious journey through generic environments, marred by weak storytelling and unexciting gameplay. So, my gaming friends, unless you're intrigued by the prospect of a game that's as enjoyable as an actual alien probing, I'd recommend giving Greyhill Incident a pass.
