GRID LEGENDS - The game GRID 2019 wanted to be.

GRID Legends is Codemasters’ return to the GRID series for the 5th time, and while we all know the previous game was quite a step in the wrong direction for most fans, I think GRID Legends could be considered a reboot of the reboot. GRID 2019 had some good things about it but what made it fun was massively drawn back by it’s lack of depth and replayability past the grindy single player races. One step forward, two steps back.

Enter GRID Legends, with it’s documentary style Driven to Glory story mode, it’s cross play multiplayer feature, Race Creator mode to set up your own races and then the many different classes with over 120 cars to choose from. It sounds like this GRID release has all of the right things going on for it on the surface.

Driven to Glory

GRID Legends is very fun. As a racing game fan, this game checks most of the boxes for me. While there are still some features missing from the game (still no pit stops for one), it’s not a deal breaker for me. The story mode is very entertaining as you earn a seat at Seneca Racing and race alongside Yume Tanaka, your team mate who isn’t too keen on you at first. As you progress in this Drive to Survive dramatic session, you will form rivalries with Valentin Manzi and of course Ravenwest’s top driver Nathan McKane. As the anonymous Driver 22, you will drive to glory as you focus on taking Seneca to their first successful season within GRID.

Driven to Glory moves fast, as the documentary parts only happen before the races to set up the goal for the chapter. The game moves fast and you’re racing in no time. Achieving these goals moves you along quickly and the acting is rather enjoyable. While the story and character development isn’t the deepest thing to exist, it’s refreshing to see this type of single player in a racing game. F1 2021 just did this with their version of it called Braking Point. While Braking Point had a slightly better story overall, I feel like Driven to Glory was still enjoyable. The quick scenes gave you just enough to keep you entertained and motivated to finish the season. The mode’s 36 chapters will give you roughly 6-7 hours of content alone and is definitely the way to start your GRID Legends experience. I highly recommend this for 3 reasons. 1: it sets up career mode in terms of why your team mate is who he is. 2: You’ll enjoy the story arc of what happens to both Yume and the other Ravenwest driver, Lara Carvalho. Seriously when they show what finally happened to Yume after that gnarly crash it made my jaw drop and tear up. Call me a softy but I wasn’t expecting that at all. 3: Completing the story mode gives you a couple hundred thousand dollars to play with when you begin career mode. Also, make sure you watch the credits as the videos shown are pure gold.

Let the grinding begin

Career mode gives us the usual single player racing experience. Open menu, pick race, race the race, go back to menu. Rinse and repeat for hours and hours. While I find nothing wrong with it, I find it lackluster and it’s not just GRID Legends fault, it’s racing games as a whole that has this problem. Yet, GRID gives us a slew of racing disciplines and tracks to keep things interesting. The gameplay itself is phenomenal and the return of the Nemesis system returns to make sure that you drive like a normal person or that they will remember you after a huge hit and want to smash into you. This is where driving can get hairy as one moment you’re just pushing for 3rd place and next thing you know you’re heading into a wall with no escape....

Score: 7.5

Pros: Story mode is good fun. Driving is much better this time around. Race Creator offers thousands of possibilities for big time replayability. Online mode is now cross platform.

Cons: Too casual for hardcore sim racing fans. AI is not consistent. Career mode is bland.
