Here are the Rules of a Soul Link:

1. You are only allowed to catch the first Pokémon you encounter in each city, route, and/or area.

2. You must nickname a Pokémon once you capture it.

3. If a Pokémon faints, it is considered dead, and you must put it in a designated Death Box in the PC, and you won't be able to use it again.

In addition to those rules, these special rules apply to a Soul Link:
4. Both players much catch both of their first encounters in order to add them to the team.

5. You are not allowed to have matching Primary Typings on both teams (in other words, you can only have one Primary Normal Type on both teams, but you can have as many Secondary Normal Types as you please)

6. Each pair has to be a different gender (unless they're static encounters, like the starters and gift Pokémon). Non-Gender Pokémon can be linked.

7. If one player loses a Pokémon, then the other player loses the Pokémon that is linked to the first player's Pokémon as well, hence why they're Soul Linked.
