24The C12, an original complete car based on the C5 Corvette, was built by Callaway who have been deeply involved with Chevrolet from its beginnings. Announced in 1999, it went on sale in 2000.
The Callaway C12 skillfully utilized the independent frame characteristic of the Corvette, and made its appearance with totally new body panels given a classical modern theme. It looks nothing like the original.
The body is constructed with a high level of precision, and there are many new features such as LCD multi-monitors in the interior that draws a line between the C12 and the standard model.
The mechanical components in the vehicle are tuned based on C5 Corvette, and the maximum output of the LS1 has been raised to 432 HP. The details of the suspension tuning are not disclosed, but it is equipped with 19-inch wheels, and of course it has been tuned to take on the increased power. It is equipped with Alcon racing spec brakes, and the transmission is a 6-speed manual.
As all Callaway C12s are order made, it is a very expensive model at $178,000. The performance is impressive, doing 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, 0-100 mph in 9.8 seconds, and a 1/4 mile in 12.8 seconds. Its top speed is 192 mph, and it has recorded turning Gs of 1.04G on the skid pad. This is quite possibly the world's fastest convertible.
