I think most gamers are familiar with this scene: You’re cruising down the street in a beat-up car, without a care in the world, listening to v-rock. But in case you aren’t, today i’ll tell you why GTA:vice city is such a legendary game.

History: When gta 3 released in 2001, it revolutionized the series. It caused many people to buy a console just to play it. It was getting increasingly popular, and that resulted it in being the second highest selling game of 2002, with number one being vice city. It used the same game engine as gta 3, and was initially released for ps2. It had incredible sales figures; but they could have been even higher, if the game wasn’t targeted specifically at adults. SOmething that rockstar realized way too late.

Story:
Grand theft auto vice city takes place in 1986, in Vice City, a fictional place based on Miami.
You follow the adventures of Forelli mobster Tommy Vercetti, who just came out of jail for a 15 year murder sentence. Tommy’s boss, Sonny wants to expand his drug trafficking operations in the souuth, and sends Tommy to vice city, to look over a drug deal. However, they are ambushed by an unknown organization, and bewildered Sonny orders Tommy to recover the lost green and drugs.

Gameplay:
Ok, let’s take a look at the title - Grand Theft Auto.
Is the game Grand?
well, sure it. The Vice City map is huge, and has a very pleasant atmosphere to it. There’s lots to explore, and it’s sometimes very hard to stay on task when there’s so many cool places and easter eggs you haven’t seen yet. By the way, it’s no accident that I picked “you’ve got another thing coming” as the soundtrack for this video, as that’s just one of the many great songs you can listen to on the v-rock radio station. it includes hits by Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden and more. And in fact, there’s many radio stations, which is cool because it can provide the appropriate chase music.

Theft
the map’s full of shit you can steal - cars, bikes, planes, boats, guns, and more.

and now, finally. The “auto” part of the title. in fact, there’s 101 vehicles in total. Though, the cars i felt are one of the weaker aspects of vice city. They look great, but are comically slow and easy to roll over. you’re way better of using a bike to travel instead- On a car, you can perform unique stunts and get rewards. On a bike, it’s even simpler - just hold a wheelie for long enough.
The game is basically just completing missions. Missions are tasks given to you by multiple characters.. They range from demolishing a buidling with a RC heli, to apparently entering a warzone. Missions often have to be repeated, and they’re fun every time (except for demolition man) i mean, what were the devs smoking when they came up with this shit? it’s ok on console, but on the pc the controls are entirely counter-intuitive. They can be adjusted, but i’d rather die than open this can of worms -
At the end of missions, you get a reward, in the form of cash.
Vice city features a mediocre selection of weapons, and a unique fighting mechanic. You can fight with ANY npc on the map. Police chases are very easy until you hit 4-5 stars, when the police will deploy a heli and swat team to gun you down. You can lose the cops by enterins a pay-n-spray, which costs 100$. the game features 51 cheat codes, some are for vehicles, other do funky stuff like stop time.

====

Conclusion:
Vice City has a huge map, great engaging atmosphere and A LOT of gameplay. Some missions are frustrating, but for the most part are fun and exciting. The game has tons of easter eggs and cheat codes. All these things combined with the great looks make it one of the best in the series
