Disney/Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has exceeded expectations, holding strong with a weekend total of $38.8m, down only 20% from its opening on Friday and previews at $48.2m. This opening weekend figure will bring the James Gunn-directed Marvel Cinematic Universe swan song to $114m, higher than the projected $110m predicted earlier in the week. While some have expressed concerns about superhero fatigue, the $100m+ opening for the summer will help ease fears about the film industry as a whole, putting pressure on the rest of the season to deliver. GOTG3 has grossed $282m globally, $168m of which is overseas, ranking as the 50th-highest global debut ever for a movie.
