Guess it's back to work... (READ DESCRIPTION FOR CONTEXT)
TL;DR I was actually able to recover the hard drive that contained all of the music I had been messing with. I seriously thought after all these years the HDD vanished (since 2020?) and now, I can finish all the projects I was working on...
With that out of the way, what the hell is going on with this video?
0:00 - This is the original song that I originally uploaded back when I did the complete OST years back. Listening to it now after all these years, its too "in your face" when compared to the original Genesis OST. The notes are for the most part are correct (albeit with some missing elements) but the instrumentation is... Off...
1:23 - Before my laptop crashed, this was the file I was working with. Some refinements to instrumentation soften the sound so it wasn't as in your face sounding but now the bassline was too far forward in the mix and the piano is still wrong but sounds better vs the original. Adding vibrato to the lead in the 2nd half of the song improved things a bit but still doesn't sound right. But upgrading the snare alone made a huuuuuuge difference in how it all comes together.
2:49 - Further recent refinement of instrumentation, particularly the piano and bassline that I've had in my mind all these years and now finally being able to apply it. I tweaked an EPiano to come to a close approximation of the synth the Genesis uses. I also tweaked an FM synth to come close to the bassline of the one used in the original. These 2 elements make a huge difference in the impact of the dissonant notes playing against each other in the 2nd half of the song with the 3rd set of piano notes kick in vs the original instruments I had used. With the addition of the open hats, it's almost complete. I just need to find a good sound for the delayed "WAH" lead sound to resemble the Genesis during the dissonant piano breakdown and then set the volume levels.
4:50 - A refinement of Terrible Beat that I think I am happy with. Again, I cannot stress how much the snare alone changes the tone of the song vs the original one I did. Instruments have been softened to mesh with how the Genesis conveyed the OST. I put this here to show I've been reworking the entire OST and these 2 songs are close to completion.
For a comparison of refinements to the original Terrible Beat - • REMIX - Revenge of Shinobi - Sega Genesis ...
I am also reworking other stuff I've done for further refinements as everything I did was just too raw IMO. It will take time as my life situation has changed a bit but as it stands, its back to work...
