It's a card battler and an auto battler combined. There are two phases. The first phase is preparation where you have full control to apply cards to your units. The second phase is the fight action which is played out automatically. So, you don't have any control over which character attacks which enemy, or when to move them around. This can make the game very annoying if the automation of the characters doesn't align with how you would have played them yourself. Also, sometimes you will probably feel the game has cheated you in some way, considering the game also decides what cards are dealt to your hand at any particular time in the battle.
