Gun Types - Pros and Cons: Submachine Guns
A look at the Submachine gun weapon type, popular at the end of World War 1, mass produced during World War 2 and which became obsolete during the middle of the Cold War with the introduction of Assault rifles.
Submachine guns primarily fire pistol ammunition which has low power and range, but produces little recoil making submachine guns controllable when firing fully automatic.
Submachine guns are commonly known as SMGs or machine pistols. Famous examples include the German MP 40 and MP 5, the Russian PPSH-41 and PPS-43, The British STEN gun and Sterling submachine gun and the American M1 Thompson and M3 "Grease" gun.

Submachine guns are still used by many police forces and counter-terrorism forces where the pistol round is ideal for use in urban situations to avoid over-penetration and risk to non-combatants.
