Gundam Card Game - A First Look At My New Facination
Bandai recently announced a brand new Gundam Card Game, and as a lifelong fan of the Gundam anime franchise, and a once-avid player of the Gundam WAR card game, this has me very excited!
Set to be fully released in 2025, the new Gundam Card Game already looks like it’ll be a lot of fun to play based on the information released.
So I wanted to go through some of the key points of what we know so far about the cards, decks and gameplay, starting with the cards themselves.
There are 4 types of cards in the Gundam Card Game;
Unit Cards
Pilot Cards
Command Cards
And Base Cards
Unit cards are the equivalent of monsters in YuGiOh or Forwards in Final Fantasy. They are deployed (think summoning) onto the battlefield with summoning sickness, and make up the brunt of your combat forces.
Pilot cards, from my understanding at least, are sort of like Equip Cards in YuGiOh or Enchantments in Magic the Gathering, in that they are paired with a Unit to give that Unit a buff or extra ability.
Command Cards are one time use cards similar to Spell cards or Summons in Final Fantasy, in that they can give you an edge in battle and some can be played during your opponent's turn. Interestingly though, some can also be used as Pilot cards, which can create a fun little deck building dynamic.
And finally, Base Cards are deployed into the Shield Area of the playing field (we’ll cover that in a bit) and help to protect your Shields and provide strategic support.
The playing field is split into 7 different sections;
The Deck area
The Resource Deck area
The Shields area
The Resource Area
The Battle Area
The Base Area
And the Trash Area
The Deck area is pretty self explanatory; it’s where your deck sits during gameplay. But one thing that really excites me about the Gundam Card Game compared to other TCGs is the separate Resource Deck.
And this separate Resource Deck, obviously, sits in the Resource Deck area, and then each turn, you can move a Resource card from the Resoource Deck into the Resource Area to build up the Gundam Card Game equivalent of lands and backups.
Then we have the Shields and Base areas. Basically, the goal is to remove all of your opponent’s Shields and then attack directly to win the game. So 6 cards from your deck are placed into the Shields area facedown, and when you take damage, you turn the card face up, check if it has a Burst ability, and then move it to the Trash Area, which is basically just the Discard pile.
However, if you have a Base card in the Base area, your opponent first has to be able to get through your Base before they can attack your Shields.
Turn structure in the Gundam Card Game is overall very similar to other cards games, but has a few unique twists.
You start the turn with the Start Phase, which is basically the Upkeep phase from Magic the Gathering or the Active Phase from Final Fantasy, where and cards that are Rested (think tapped or dulled) are changed to Active.
Next you have the Draw phase, where you draw a single card from your deck, before moving to the Resource Phase where you take 1 Resource Card from your Resource Deck and put it into play.
This effectively works as a double draw, similar to how in Final Fantasy you draw two cards, except that the second card is always a Resource Card and is always played to the field immediately.
In the main phase, you can do all the usual things you’d expect in a card game, like playing a Pilot card or deploying a Unit, etc. However, combat also takes place in the Main Phase.
Gundam Card Game does not have a specific, dedicated combat phase.
Once you’ve done everything you want to do in the Main Phase, you then move directly to the End Phase. Unlike YuGiOh, Magic or Final Fantasy, there isn’t a Main Phase 2 because everything happens in the Main Phase.
The last thing we’re going to quickly cover is the rules around deck sizes.
Again, you technically have two decks; your Main Deck and your Resource Deck. The main deck can be made up of all four card types; Units, Pilots, Commands and Bases, and must be a total of 50 cards.
The Resource Deck is made up of only Resource Cards, and can only be a total of 10 cards.
I’m actually really excited to get my hands on the Gundam Card Game, and it will almost certainly be a staple of content on this channel in terms of TCGs moving forward, alongside the Final Fantasy TCG.
The Beta Edition of the Gundam Card Game is fast approaching, and I’m going to try to get my hands on it so I can show you all some card analysis, initial deck building strategies and actual gameplay, but at the very least, I’ll keep you up to date on news around the Gundam Card Game until it’s full release in 2025.
