Hacks Showcase 35/Pirate Originals & Bootlegs Showcase 13: Super Contra 7 (NES)
Developer/Hacker: E.S.C. Co
Year: 1996
Platform : NES
Hack of: Super Contra
Ah, this is Super Contra 7, a hack/bootleg (technically, it's both a hack and a bootleg) made by E.S.C. Co.
This is far better than the Star Wars - Battle City hack I showcased previously. At least Super Contra 7 actually KEEPS the power-ups that is in the original and the 2-player Co-Op.
I will say this, though: there are some flaws about it. One example is the 1st Boss (and it's projectiles); sometimes it's projectiles will curve or spaz out, making it hard or impossible to avoid. Another example is how the enemies ALWAYS spawn on the extreme right and extreme left sides of the screen, even when you're fighting the game's bosses (well, 4 out of the 5 bosses in this game still have enemies that constantly spawn in from either side, which can make it kind of cheap, in my opinion). Another issue that I have with this hack/bootleg is that sometimes it's possible to touch bosses and sometimes it isn't (though this only becomes a problem during the first and fourth boss fights - although the enemies constantly spawning on both sides of the screen doesn't help, either).
The controls are similar to Super Contra's (I.E., you can turn around in mid-air, so it's not impossible to avoid enemies, aside from the lower gravity, which could make enemies and shots easier to avoid). I will say that you can auto-fire in the game - this even applies to the weapon power-ups - so at least you do not have to use a turbo controller.
As for the weapons......well, the "S" - Spread Gun - is one of the worst power-ups in Super Contra 7. It's rate of fire is slow, plus it doesn't have full-range. (Trying to kill the 1st boss with the "S" power-up is agonizing; don't do it).
The "F" - Flamethrower Gun - is a pretty good power-up (despite it being mediocre in Super Contra) because it's rate of fire is as fast as the machine gun's and it's more powerful than the machine gun. This power-up is a good choice against the 1st and 4th bosses.
The "M" - Machine Gun - is your starting weapon. This CAN be good in some circumstances, but it isn't great against the bosses (though it IS better than the Spread Gun, at least).
The "L" - Laser Gun - is surprisingly the best power-up in the game. Yes, it's rate of fire may be slow, but at least it doesn't DISAPPEAR when you auto-fire the thing (unlike Contra and Super C's version of the Laser Gun). It's also the most powerful weapon in SC7. (I have seen it kill the 1st boss in 8 hits and the 4th boss in about 6 or so hits).
The "R" power-up gives you an extra life - and considering that you do not get ANY points - at least I don't think you get any - for killing enemies - this is the only way to get extra lives in this game.
The "P" power-up destroys every enemy on the screen (which makes it pretty good).
The "B" power-up makes you invincible, but you cannot kill enemies (think of the Starman from Super Smash Bros and you will know what I mean) - but here's the funny thing - you CANNOT grab power-ups while you're invincible (barrier or no barrier). That's kind of lame, but it at least protects you from bullets and obstacles. (It does have a pretty short time before it expires, though, so it might be the second-worst power-up in the game).
There is something I need to say about Super Contra 7 (specifically about it's power-up system); it randomizes them. That's right - it is possible to see nothing but the same power-up you have or you have had previously (this goes for all stages in this hack/bootleg, so do not be surprised when you get a piece of junk like the Spread Gun and you see the "S" power-up 3 times in the same stage).
Oddly enough, you can also auto-jump (I think the only game where you can auto-jump that I have played is Amagon for the NES).
I will say that this is a decent hack/bootleg (and it is definitely far better than the Star Wars - Battle City hack I showcased earlier on this channel).
The music isn't great, either, but I have heard worse.
(P.S.: If you're having trouble beating the game - which you might if you're against the 1st boss, which is the hardest boss in the game - there is a 50 lives code by pressing A+Start or B+Start). (Even more oddly, there's a code which lets you see the ending of this hack/bootleg)! (Press A+B+Start to instantly see the ending).
See you later for the next epsiode of Hacks Showcase and/or the next episode of Pirate Originals & Bootlegs Showcase!
