The VM in question was a demonstration machine that my professor used, housed with the Minix operating system. It was the OS he would use to teach the class and that we would modify throughout the semester. He lightly said in the middle of one his lectures. "Minix is so secure. If anyone could hack into my virtual machine, I'd give them an 'A'. I doubt he meant it, but I couldn't resist the challenge!! So I took it up.
I was the only one in my class of 50 to do it. And I got an 'A' 2 or 3 weeks into the course.
