Halo 3 feels more like an epilogue than an actual sequel at times, which gives the game a slightly anticlimactic feel. The game is largely broken into three acts with the first act, being the longest, involving the war on earth against the Covenant and the Prophet of Truth. The second act involves the Ark and the final battle with Truth. The third act resolves lingering plot threads involving Cortana and Halo, which are sort of the lingering arc throughout the game. Compared to the first act, the other two acts are short by comparison and don’t have the impact they should.

This structure is a peculiar one and it can be a tad disjointed at times. A weak ending that mostly regurgitates the original Halo doesn’t help matters. The paper-thin characters also undercut a few key moments late in the narrative. Arbiter being pushed to a supporting role is unfortunate and it would have been nice to have a few missions with him since his were the highlight in Halo 2. Master Chief’s journey to find and save Cortana after the events of Halo 2 is the running thread throughout and Jen Taylor does a great job as the AI. So does Steve Downes, but his character is pretty one-note. Perhaps by design, but that undercuts a couple of key moments.

Even with this choppy narrative structure, Halo 3 delivers the usual elements we’ve come to expect such as large-scale action setpieces and furious gunplay. Bungie does a good job keeps the elements varied and exciting. Vehicles get a stronger emphasis in Halo 3 with them being a major point of four of the nine main missions and none feel repetitive. They help give an epic scope to some of the later missions. The music is mostly greatest hits, but it’s hard to argue with those hits. Visuals are sharp and clean and there’s little slowdown or lag.

While the story is a disappointment—a problem for the series as a whole—the game provides a decent enough finish to the trilogy with plenty of exciting gameplay that doesn’t overstay its welcome and gives the gamer more of what they expect. It might not be on par with its predecessor or Reach when it comes to thrills and shocks, but it still is fun to play.
