Halo Infinite hasn't had the smoothest time in development. Microsoft showcased their new Halo project, presenting it as the future of the franchise. This announcement was quickly overshadowed by the adverse reaction to the first gameplay trailer, with the majority disappointed with what they saw. The main culprit was how the game looked. It didn't help that the developers behind the project, 343 industries, have not been able to win over the fanbase. After a disappointing Halo 5 and a Master Chief Collection plagued with issues for years, it's easy to understand why.

Unfortunately, the situation didn't get much better when it was announced that Microsoft's flagship sci-fi shooter would be missing their new console's launch. This was over a year ago but writing that sentence is still a shock. I'm not saying it was the wrong move, no one can really say that, but that decision could not have come easily. At a time when the Xbox's biggest competitor, Sony, was also releasing a new console and seemed to already be running away with the competition delaying one of the few first-party franchises seemed insane. I can only imagine the stressful meetings and arm twisting that had to happen for that decision to be made.

But it's a year later; both the Playstation 5 and Xbox consoles have been released, and no one can buy them anyway, so… score for Microsoft? Halo Infinite did get its first positive media attention with its multiplayer beta. The sentiment was that they somehow managed to go back to what Halo fans wanted, dumping the things that didn't work, seriously screw armor lock, while improving what was there. The reaction was very positive; people seemed to love their time in the beta. And for what it's worth, the game looked better too. Also, it was announced that the multiplayer would be free, which, even though it makes complete sense in the current fps market, is still not something many expected. While the positive reaction from the beta and the news that it wouldn't cost anything bought Microsoft some goodwill, they did have to spend that quickly. Soon after, it was announced that the campaign would not be playable co-op at launch. Which, as synonymous as Halo campaign and co-op are, is a rather big blow.

But then things got better again. During the Xbox's twenty-year celebration stream, Microsoft & 343 surprised everyone by releasing the multiplayer early. Or at least they would have if this industry could keep a secret. But you can play Halo multiplayer right now, for free, and if you've clicked this video, you probably have. They're calling this an open beta that will carry progression over to the game's official release on December 8th. And like the original beta, the initial response is positive, free Halo multiplayer what's not to love? More goodwill points for Microsoft.

Well, kind of. As time ticked forward. People have certainly had some issues with the Halo Multiplayer. The biggest one being the progression in the multiplayer. There have been many complaints about the small amount of reward you get for completing challenges making progress feel impossible. Along with that is the problem with the challenges themselves, often requiring a specific action, forcing people to spend the round trying to complete that action instead of just playing that game. Fortunately, all the progression rewards are cosmetic, as they should be. But as someone who really doesn't care about cosmetics, I can ignore this entirely. Now I know what you're thinking "Yay, for you Logical Leveling, you beat the system by not caring." Well, not quite, I'm enjoying the game and want to keep playing, and that only happens if others are playing, so if the majority has an issue, then everyone does. But… I, unfortunately, fall into a slightly smaller yet equally annoyed camp with the Halo multiplayer, and that's the features and customization we're missing.
