Halo Infinite is a 2021 first-person shooter game developed by 343 Industries and published by Xbox Game Studios.
One year after the events of Halo 5: Guardians, the UNSC Infinity is attacked by the Banished, a faction of former Covenant species led by the warlord Atriox. Atriox quickly defeats the Master Chief and hurls him into space as the Infinity is destroyed by the Banished. Six months later, a UNSC pilot code-named Echo 216 discovers the Chief adrift in space and brings him into his Pelican dropship, restoring power to his armor. The Chief and Echo-216 travel to the nearby surface of Zeta Halo (Installation 07), one of the seven installations of the Halo Array, which has been severely damaged and fragmented by an unknown calamity. On the surface of the ring, the Chief locates the Weapon, an artificial intelligence designed to imitate Cortana to capture her for deletion. While the Weapon states that she was successful in her mission, she has failed to self-delete per her programming, for unknown reasons. The Chief retrieves the Weapon, and begins to experience visions of Cortana's memories and thoughts, which the Weapon explains are “dust and echoes” lingering after Cortana's death.
The Chief discovers that Zeta Halo has been completely taken over by the Banished, now led by Atriox's lieutenant Escharum after Atriox's apparent death. The Chief, the Weapon, and a reluctant Echo-216 begin rallying scattered UNSC forces on the ring's surface to fight back against the Banished and prevent them from controlling Zeta Halo. The Chief learns that the Banished have excavated a Forerunner facility known of the Conservatory, inside of which the Chief encounters 117649 Despondent Pyre, the Monitor of Zeta Halo. Despondent Pyre attempts to warn the Chief of a threat contained on the installation, but is subsequently destroyed by the Harbinger, an alien being reawakened by the Banished upon their arrival on Zeta Halo. The Harbinger claims that her people, the Endless, survived the firing of the Halo Array but were subsequently imprisoned by the Forerunners on Zeta Halo. She has allied herself with the Banished in order to rebuild the Silent Auditorium, a facility which will allow her to free the Endless.
The Chief and Echo-216 are shot down in Banished territory, where Echo-216 breaks down out of fear, revealing that he was an engineer on the Infinity who stole the Pelican in an attempt to flee from the Banished. The Chief comforts Echo-216, and begins to come to terms with his own humanity, admitting his lingering guilt over his failure to save Cortana. The Harbinger activates a series of Spires intended to repair Zeta Halo, but the Chief and the Weapon are able to infiltrate the Command Spire in order to stop the process before it fully repairs the ring. When the Harbinger attempts to hack the Weapon, the Chief activates a failsafe to delete her, but the Weapon is able to repel the Harbinger and deactivate the failsafe. The Weapon is upset with the Chief for attempting to delete her, asking why he still does not trust her despite how she has helped him. Echo-216 is subsequently captured by Escharum and brought to the House of Reckoning, the headquarters of the Banished, where Escharum taunts the Chief into confronting him in order to rescue Echo-216. The Chief infiltrates the facility and kills Escharum, saving Echo-216.
While the reformation of Zeta Halo has been halted, the Harbinger has successfully reconstructed the Silent Auditorium, which the Chief and the Weapon infiltrate in order to stop her. As they encounter more echoes remaining from Cortana, the Chief and the Weapon witness the many acts of violence she has committed using the Guardians, including the destruction of the Brute homeworld Doisac. Upon learning that she is an exact copy of Cortana, the Weapon instructs the Chief to delete her to prevent her from going rampant like Cortana, but the Chief refuses, stating that he wants to trust her. The two then learn that Cortana was captured by Atriox during the attack on the Infinity; upon realizing Atriox's intent, she destroyed herself and part of the ring, stopping it from being fired, resulting in the damage to Zeta Halo. A final message left behind by Cortana says goodbye to the Chief, urging him and the Weapon not to repeat her mistakes. The Chief confronts and defeats the Harbinger, and reunites with Echo-216, resolving to continue to fight against the Banished presence on the ring. Echo-216 reveals his real name is Fernando Esparza, and when he asks what he should call the Weapon, she begins to ponder a name for herself. Although not explicitly stated in the dialogue, it is heavily implied that the Weapon has taken Cortana's name for herself.
