The story takes place in feudal Japan, set in the Warring States period, with the player taking the role of a wandering ronin arriving in a small province called Gishu Amana, which is under the rule of the Fujimori clan.[2] Opposing the Fujimori clan are the Ouka party, who were formerly samurai under the Sakurai clan, last ruler of Gishu Amana.[3] They originally wanted to revive the old forces, but are now not much better than a gang of mere bandits. The third faction is the people of Koshu village, suffering from the heavy taxes and labours imposed upon them. Like the previous games, Way of the Samurai 3 will feature branching plotlines and different endings depending on the choices players make.
