In the late 80s, Irem was well known for creating some unforgettable arcade
titles such as Moon Patrol (1982), Kung-Fu Master (1984), and R-Type (1987).
One of their next releases would be an action title featuring a young carpenter
with a massive hammer. Daiku no Gen-san: Beranmechō Sōdōki (Carpenter
Gen: Uproar in Beranme) released in 1990 in Japan to moderate success with
its brightly colors stages, solid platforming, and punishing gameplay where
one hit would kill you. Nonetheless, Carpenter Gen was recognizable
character but when it arrived to the West, it was renamed to Hammerin’ Harry
in arcades and consoles. Gen-san would go on to have seven titles created
in-house until Irem ceased video game development in 1994.

Harry would see a return to action in 2000 on the Game Boy Color in Carpenter
Genzo: Robot Empire (JP and Asia) as well as one based on the anime
adaptation of the series, Ikuze! Gen-san!, in 2008 on the PSP, released as
Hammerin’ Hero. The character of Gen-san (Harry) would join the likes of the
R-Type ship as Irem’s mascots and would have cameos in various pieces of
media and games. Regardless of who his foes are, this brave carpenter is
always ready to stand up and bring the hammer down!

Following the arcade release, Daiku no Gen-san would arrive on the Famicom
in 1991 followed by an NES® PAL release as Hammerin’ Harry in 1992 for
certain PAL regions. It would never see a physical release in North America.
Irem sought to make the home console version a easier than the arcade.
Gone are one-hit deaths which are replaced by giving Harry a health meter as
well as various items and power ups to use.
There are now only five stages instead of six. Due to the limitation of the
home console, Harry can no longer smash boxes across the ground like in the
arcade. Additionally bonus rounds were added at the end of each stage to
gain extra lives. The final two stages were totally redone to feature a boat
stage and a mansion stage for the final encounters.
The PAL version would edit out certain Japanese references such as ramen
shops becoming pasta stands as well as having an infamous cover art that
you had to see to believe. The Rusty Nail Construction Company has
demolished Harry’s home and are threatening to take over the his town. It is
up to the brave carpenter to exact revenge and end their crooked ways.
