The Game Boy version of Samurai Shodown strives to deliver a faithful handheld adaptation of the arcade classic. It includes the full roster of characters, all the stages, and most of the special moves that define the original experience. However, due to hardware limitations, key features such as combos, fatalities, and character voices have been omitted. Despite these cuts, the game retains its identity, offering players an engaging fighting game experience that aligns with the series' signature style.

In terms of audio, all the original music tracks are included, albeit in a scaled-down form to accommodate the Game Boy's capabilities. Released in 1994, this version brought Samurai Shodown to Nintendo's handheld alongside other console ports for systems like the SNES, Sega Genesis, and Neo Geo CD. Samurai Shodown found its way to additional platforms, including the SEGA CD (1995), Wii Virtual Console (2007), and even modern consoles like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch starting in 2017
