Music is a cherished part of many holidays and celebrations, and Hanukkah is no exception. From the blessings sung while lighting the menorah, to songs about the traditions and history, music is an important part of Hanukkah ceremonies. During Hanukkah, songs are often included during the lighting of the menorah. Some Chanukah songs are in English while others are in the traditional Hebrew.

Many Hanukkah songs are actually traditional prayers and some, like the hymn "Haneirot Halalu," are sung after the Hanukkah blessings have been recited and the new light on the Menorah has been lit.

"Ma'oz Tzur," or "Rock of Ages," is another popular Hanukkah song. Written in Hebrew, the song is often sung in its English version. The original words to the song may date back to the 13th or 14th century, but the English version was written in the 19th Century.

Some Hanukkah songs are specifically for children, including the song "Oh, Chanukah, Oh Chanukah." This song celebrates the lighting of the Menorah and the party and feast. Another example of a children's song is "Sivivon, sov, sov, sov." Translated from Hebrew, this song talks about the dreidel, the holiday celebration and the "great miracle." And perhaps one of the most recognizable Hanukkah songs sung by children during the holiday is "I Have a Little Dreidel," or simply, "The Dreidel Song." In the song, a child plays with a dreidel toy made out of clay.


In 1996, Adam Sandler included a tune called "The Chanukah Song" on a live comedy album. Since then, the song has become a contemporary classic. During the intro to the live version of "The Chanukah Song," Sandler explains that "theres alot of Xmas songs out there, but not too many about Hanukkah, so I wrote a song for all those nice little Jewish kids who dont get to hear any Hanukkah songs." Sandler later recorded two other versions of "The Chanukah Song" - each version names a host of different Jewish celebrities. The original "Chanukah Song" was covered by Neil Diamond in 2009.
