Hard Times is a 1975 action drama film set in the Great Depression era. It follows Chaney (Charles Bronson), a mysterious drifter who arrives in New Orleans and becomes a bare-knuckle fighter for money. He teams up with Speed (James Coburn), a fast-talking promoter who arranges illegal matches for him. Along the way, he meets Lucy (Jill Ireland), a lonely woman whose husband is in jail. Chaney faces various opponents, including a local champion named Skinhead and a Chicago fighter brought by a rival promoter. The film showcases Bronson’s physical prowess and minimalistic acting style, as well as Coburn’s charismatic performance and witty dialogue. It also features authentic locations and costumes that capture the atmosphere of the 1930s. Hard Times is Walter Hill’s directorial debut and one of his best films. It is a gritty and realistic portrayal of the harsh realities of life and the brutal sport of street fighting.
