Here's a little detail you may have forgotten about in Harry Potter.

Harry Potter came very close to being sorted into Slytherin before he persuaded the Hat to sort him into Gryffindor. Yet the spectre of Slytherin haunted him for some time afterwards, becoming particularly potent in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, when he was rumoured to be the heir of Slytherin. Speaking to a snake in front of his fellow students certainly didn’t help.

But was Harry ever really that close to Slytherin, or did the Sorting Hat merely sense a spark of Lord Voldemort inside him? After all, years later, Harry would discover that the reason he had so many links to Voldemort, such as being a Parselmouth, was due to his being an unintentional Horcrux. There was also the fact that Harry could access the Sword of Gryffindor, which – according to Albus Dumbledore – only a ‘true Gryffindor’ could wield. But Harry did share some Slytherin traits: he was ambitious and cunning, always sneaking around after hours and cooking up plans with Ron and Hermione. His green eyes even match the house. It is curious to think what the Sorting Hat would have deduced without Voldemort’s involvement in Harry’s life.

Slytherin is Ambitious. A Slytherin is Cunning. At the core, a Slytherin will choose the option that will most benefit them. Variance aside, it's cold logic. A Slytherin will tolerate an uncomfortable environment if it will prove beneficial.

At the point in the novels in which Harry is sorted, he knows exactly 2 things about Slytherin:

Hagrid told him that Voldemort was in Slytherin, and that that's where most bad wizards are from.

Draco Malfoy, a boy he found distasteful, was a Slytherin through and through.

If Harry were a Slytherin, he would have taken those bits of information and digested them differently than he did. If he were a Slytherin he would have said to himself "I know my own morality, I will not lose myself, and if Slytherin is the house where I can become the best version of me possible then I can tolerate a distasteful house-mate. I can stomach being in the same house as my parents' killer."

If Harry were a Slytherin at the core, he would have tolerated uncomfortable circumstances to get ahead.

Also note that the book gave him 3 options: Slytherin, Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw (sorry Hufflepuff). The Hat says of Harry "Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind, either. There’s talent, oh my goodness, yes—and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that’s interesting… So where shall I put you?"

The hat is listing the three Houses Harry fits. He has the intelligence and wits for Ravenclaw, the thirst to prove himself (ambition) for Slytherin, and the Courage of a Gryffindor. He only makes one choice "Not Slytherin". The hat sorts him into Gryffindor.

Harry's choice of telling the Hat "Not Slytherin" was not just him choosing houses, it was a demonstration of his true persona: he was not someone whose ambition ruled his choices.

Harry's choice, interestingly enough, also ruled him out of Ravenclaw. He made his choice of "Not Slytherin" based on emotion and limited information. A Ravenclaw is Clever. A Ravenclaw is Witty. A Ravenclaw is for those who make the rational choice after considering all of the options using logic.

By saying "Not Slytherin" Harry is ruling himself out of Ravenclaw as well. Not because he lacks the intelligence for Ravenclaw, but because he chooses to utilize his gut instinct over his logic and reason. Harry did not weigh his options. Harry put no logic or wit into his decision making. He knew he would find being in Slytherin uncomfortable and made the call on gut instinct.

If the Sorting Hat had said "So where shall I put you" and Harry's response was to think "Well, I want to be successful and Slytherin would be a big help there no doubt as that's what their main focus is... but Ravenclaw is where the intelligent go, and knowledge is power... but Gryffindor is for the Bold and I want to blaze my own path..." then he'd have been a Ravenclaw. A Ravenclaw would want to weigh their options and make the logical decision.

Harry's mind does not work that way.
