Konami: the god-tier makers of pachinko machines, health spas, and... hockey games?

Blades of Steel: the game that single-handedly defined videogame hockey for a generation with fast-paced action, iconic presentation, and fighting mini-games--and one of Falstaff's all-time favourite games. Falstaff laces 'em up and launches some clappers from the blue line, but can ol' Dusty keep up? In episode 6 of Hat-Trix, we talk about the art of defence in Blades of Steel, why the designers might have coloured the ice grey, what happened to old game publishers, and retro revival consoles.

Blades of Steel is the second-best hockey game of all-time, released by Konami for North American arcades in 1987, and ported to the Family Computer Disk System and Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. All teams are fictional but based out of real Canadian and American cities. Gameplay footage was captured on a Raspberry Pi at 1080p 60 fps.
