STRATEGIC MIND: THE PACIFIC, THE PC GAME
Strategic Mind: The Pacific is a turn-based world war 2 (WW2) strategy game developed by the Ukrainian studio Starni Games and published in 2019. The game is being played on a hex-field map.

Players represent either a US or a Japanese admiral. They control a taskforce of naval and air units. Later in the campaign ground troops are added as well. Strategic Mind: The Pacific offers scenarios based on real historic events of WW2 and depending on the player's success fictive ones like the Japanese invasion of Australia or occupation of Pearl Harbour. The game presents a historical narrative in cutscenes and mission statements.

STRATEGIC MIND: THE PACIFIC - THE BACKGROUND
Strategic Mind: The Pacific is based on the military conflict between Imperial Japan and the USA raging in the Pacific region from 1941 to 1945. This was one of the most significant war theaters of WW2. Some historians recognize the beginning of WW2 with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931.
The Strategic Mind game series is based on the classic and highly renowned Panzer General series which was first published in 1994 by SSI and has millions of fans worldwide.

STRATEGIC MIND: THE PACIFIC - MORE GAME INFO
Strategic Mind: The Pacific is - when looking at the core game mechanics - relatively similar to the classic Panzer General series. Beside modern graphics and effects it does contain many new features: Units can be equipped with weapons, special items or other upgrades. Units gain experience and can choose different abilities when gaining levels. In addition there are heroes based on real historic personalities of WW2 that can be assigned to certain units.

The game creates a narrative and many cut-scenes add to the atmosphere. The game sports a great variety of units ranging from infantry, artillery, tanks, anti-air or anti-tank, fighter planes or tactical bombers. As players represent the Japanese or United States' navy there is naturally a focus on naval units like battleships, cruisers, destroyers, carriers and submarines. Many of these are historically accurate WW2 models.

In the game the player must not only be successful in the missions as an admiral but also see to the accumulation of prestige. With prestige you pay for new units, replacements and upgrades. The game also includes a logistical layer. There are supply points that have to be under control in order to supply the troops at the front with much needed fuel and ammunition.

As with most games in this genre the political dimension of WW2 and the crimes committed by most factions involved are not a focus. So reading and thinking about the topic on your own is advised. Commendably the game wants to do more in this regard than others and addresses many issues in the cutscenes and secondary missions.

In the end of this series of game videos I will present my collected thoughts of the Strategic Mind: The Pacific game which will function as a test and review.

NEW HERE?
My callsign is Hardball, PlayingHardball. I’ve always loved gaming, particularly games as forms of art and ways of exploring narratives in interactive ways. I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical games/TRPGs (like XCOM, Panzercorps, Total War, Battlestar Galactica etc), and RPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
